Heart of Anaheim & Orange County.
Anaheim is different from other major cities in that the heart of the city is not confined to only the Downtown
District, but it is sprawled out over several districts. Anaheim's Skyline is also scattered over several districts. The only
significance of Downtown Anaheim is that it is the geographical and administrative center of town. The Heart of Anaheim,
which is the Economic Heart of the Orange County Metropolitan Area, is devided into three sections: 1) The Anaheim/Disneyland Resort, 2) The Colonial
District/Downtown Anaheim, and 3) The Platinum Triangle.
Sometime back in the mid 1960's, about a decade after Disneyland opened to the public, there was a proposal
for a 40 story office tower near Downtown Anaheim. The problem was, that this skyscraper would have been seen from inside
the Disneyland Theme Park, which would have grossly altered its "Magic Kingdom" atmosphere. Walt Disney realized this, and
so he paid a visit to Anaheim City Hall, and a City Ordinance was passed prohibiting the construction of any high rise which
would be seen from inside Disneyland. So, instead of staying in Downtown and expanding the heart of the city up towards the
sky like most major cities do, Anaheim expanded the heart of their city by expanding outward over several districts. After
years of expanding outward, the City of Anaheim was able to start expanding up towards the sky without violating the City
Ordinance.
If Anaheim had done what other major cities have done, Downtown Anaheim would have a skyline comparable
to that of Downtown Los Angeles and Downtown San Diego; however, people would not enjoy the beauty of Disney's Magical Kingdome
nearly as much.
